Moroccan Argan Oil for Skin: Benefits, Uses and Why It Works

Moroccan argan oil has been called liquid gold for centuries. Women of the Berber tribes in Morocco's Atlas Mountains have used it on their skin, hair and nails for generations. Today, science backs up what they always knew: argan oil is one of the most effective natural skincare ingredients on the planet.

Here's everything you need to know about argan oil for skin — what it does, why it works and how to use it properly.

What Is Argan Oil?

Argan oil is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa), which grows almost exclusively in the Souss-Massa region of southwestern Morocco. The trees are ancient — many are over 200 years old — and the extraction process is traditionally done by hand by Berber women cooperatives.

Genuine cold-pressed Moroccan argan oil is a deep amber colour with a mild nutty scent. If it's completely clear and odourless, it's likely been heavily processed and stripped of many of its active compounds.

Why Argan Oil Works for Skin

It's uniquely rich in oleic and linoleic acid

These two fatty acids make up around 80% of argan oil. Linoleic acid (omega-6) is particularly important for eczema and sensitive skin — it's one of the compounds most depleted in compromised skin barriers. Replenishing it helps skin hold moisture and resist irritation.

One of the highest natural sources of vitamin E

Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble antioxidant that neutralises free radicals — the molecules that accelerate skin ageing. Argan oil contains roughly twice the vitamin E of olive oil.

Natural anti-inflammatory properties

Polyphenols and ferulic acid in argan oil reduce skin inflammation, making it particularly effective for redness, eczema flare-ups and reactive skin conditions.

Proven Skin Benefits of Argan Oil

  • Deep hydration — penetrates deeper than most plant oils
  • Anti-ageing — improves skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines
  • Eczema and psoriasis relief — soothes inflammation and repairs the skin barrier
  • Even skin tone — reduces hyperpigmentation with regular use
  • Acne management — despite being an oil, it's non-comedogenic and regulates sebum
  • Stretch mark prevention — popular during pregnancy for its skin-elasticity benefits

How to Use Argan Oil for Skin

As a face oil (evening)

Apply 2–3 drops to clean, slightly damp skin after your serum. Press gently into skin — don't rub. Use in the evening so it can absorb overnight.

As a body treatment

Smooth a few drops onto dry areas like elbows, knees and heels. Works particularly well on cracked skin in winter.

Mixed into your moisturiser

Add a drop to your regular day cream to boost hydration without adding another step to your routine.

What to Look for When Buying Argan Oil

  • Should be labelled 100% pure Moroccan argan oil
  • Cold-pressed preserves the active compounds
  • Should come in a dark glass bottle (protects from UV degradation)
  • Amber or golden colour — not clear
